Conference with Marie Mendras – 22 January 2009

December 30, 2008

mendras russia today

In her new book, Russie, l’envers du pouvoir, Marie Mendras provides an original analysis of Russia’s political system. Contrary to conventional thinking, the state in Russia is weak and ineffective. Vladimir Putin has deconstructed and weakened most public institutions, and has consolidated a personalised system of rule. Political and economic power is concentrated in the hands of a few groups, and elites must be loyal to the leadership. Russian society accepts authoritarian methods because living standards have markedly improved, but the current economic crisis may put this system of rule under considerable pressure.

Marie Mendras is Professor of Government at LSE and Sciences Po. She was educated at Sciences Po, Johns Hopkins – SAIS, and Harvard University. In partnership with Sciences Po Alumni UK and Johns Hopkins University UK Alumni Chapter.

Thu 22 Jan | 7.30pm | £3, conc. £2 | in English | French Institute in London, 17 Queensberry Place, LONDON SW7 2DT

Sciences Po Alumni UK AGM – 16 December 2008

December 13, 2008

Dear Sciences Po alumni UK,

The Sciences Po Alumni UK AGM will take place on Tuesday 16 December at 7h30pm.

As in previous years, the team will undertake a review of activities in 2008, of on-going projects and plans for next year and a financial review. Also, the team will ask members to renew its mandate to lead Sciences Po Alumni UK and promote Sciences Po in the UK.

It is proposed that the Committee (Bureau) will comprise: Stefan Lavau as Treasurer (mandate which he took up last year), Julien Artero as General Secretary (in replacement of Marianne Olivier whom we will thank for her contribution to the Association) and Stéphane Rambosson as President. Noemie de Andia who was Vice President will leave the Committee and will also be thanked for her contribution to the Association; she will not be replaced.

Charitable activities of Sciences Po Alumni UK Trust will be presented by the Trustees Cecile d’Angelin and Maeva Slotine, as well as Stefan Lavau as treasurer.

Key members and contributors of the fundraising team also include Julien Artero, Frederique Andreani and Coralie Poidatz.

Also thanked will be Sandra Cossart for her contribution to our Conference cycle in partnership with the Embassy/Institut francais as well as Xavier d’Aumale, now back at Sciences Po, for his multiple contributions. The team will now also comprise Stephanie Mor!sset, student of the Sciences Po – LSE double master, who has already contributed to the successful launch of Sciences Po Wednesdays, alongside Julien Artero.

All alumni who wish to contribute will be welcomed to join the team. However, it is suggested that specific roles and responsibilities are to be decided by the Committee as a result of identified contributions.

Our team and project will require formal support of the members attending. Any other team and project will have the opportunity to be presented but should be submitted to me beforehand. In line with the former practice and rule of the Association, the President will vote on behalf of every non attending member who has not given a simple proxy (if you wish to give a proxy, please send a simple mail to Maeva Slotine copied and indicate clearly whom you wish to give proxy to).

Also, if you are unable to attend our AGM, may we communicate to you the following upcoming events:

  • Wednesday 14 January: New Year SciencesPo Wednesday at the Walkers of Whitehall, 15 Craig’s Court, SW1A (near Trafalgar Sq) at 7pm
  • Thursday 22 January: hosting at the Institut Français (with Johns Hopkins Alumni), Sciences Po – LSE Professor Marie Mendras, expert on Russia
  • Friday 6 February: Dinner-debate with Sciences Po Professor Olivier Duhamel, expert in French politics
  • Thursday 5 March: Dinner with prominent alumna Clara Gaymard, Western European Head of General Electric

We look forward to hearing from you and seeing you soon.

Amicalement,

Stéphane Rambosson, President, SciencesPo Alumni UK
