mendras russia today

In her new book, Russie, l’envers du pouvoir, Marie Mendras provides an original analysis of Russia’s political system. Contrary to conventional thinking, the state in Russia is weak and ineffective. Vladimir Putin has deconstructed and weakened most public institutions, and has consolidated a personalised system of rule. Political and economic power is concentrated in the hands of a few groups, and elites must be loyal to the leadership. Russian society accepts authoritarian methods because living standards have markedly improved, but the current economic crisis may put this system of rule under considerable pressure.

Marie Mendras is Professor of Government at LSE and Sciences Po. She was educated at Sciences Po, Johns Hopkins – SAIS, and Harvard University. In partnership with Sciences Po Alumni UK and Johns Hopkins University UK Alumni Chapter.

Looking forward to the next SciencesPo Wednesday

January 18, 2009

sciencespo-wednesday1Thank you to all of those who came to the first SciencesPo Wednesday of 2009. It was a great evening where an amazing number of alumni and students turned up. At the peak of the evening, we counted up to 80 people in the Pub. The street bar of the Walkers of Whitehall was booked exclusively for us which allowed people to mingle easely all night.

We have a few pictures of this event. As you will notice, we are not such good photographers at the Sciences Po Alumni UK and we welcome any good photographer for future events:

SciencesPo Alumni UK in the News – Pascal Cagni

January 10, 2009

With the start of the New Year, it is also time to start a new category for this blog: Alumni UK in the News.

We want to try to keep track of Sciences Po Alumni UK who appear in the news. This initiative intends to publicize Sciences Po network of people in the UK.

Today we start with Pascal Cagni, Apple’s European head, Sciences Po 1984, who was mentioned in a Financial Times’ article about Apple’s developmet in Europe:

Taking a bite out of Europe

Published: January 7 2009

Perhaps it was the absence of his boss Steve Jobs that prompted Pascal Cagni, Apple’s European head, to give this year’s Macworld conference in San Francisco a miss.

You may here or find stories about Sciences Po Alumni based in the UK: please, feel free to email us the story and we will publish it: julien.artero@gmail.com

Make a Donation?

January 4, 2009

You may have noticed that we recently added a new button at the top of the sidebar on the right:

It is now possible to make an online donation to the SciencesPo Alumni UK.

Why make a donation?

who-is-missingAs you may know, we rely on UK Alumni memberships to finance part of our annual activities and events.

We also ask sponsors to support us when organising extraordinary events such as our first Charity Gala last year.

But we organise an increasing number of social activities, such as our dinner-debates or the SciencesPo Wednesday, which require more and more funding.

Our monthly SciencesPo Wednesday is a good example as this event aims at enabling exchanges and networking between Sciences Po – LSE students and Alumni based in the UK. We try as much as we can to cover the cost of this event for students who can’t always afford it.

We are also aware our now famous dinner-debates can be expensive for students or young professionals who would like to attend. A little bit of funding could help them to attend more often.

Running this website (which is based on as many free software and online services as possible) has a cost – moderate – but still a cost to cover.

All in all, why would you make a donation?

  • Because you know what we do, and you want to support us;
  • Because you believe that we do a good job, and you want to have your part in it;
  • Because you think we can do more, and you want to help us achieve more.

If you have any questions and/or suggestions, please contact us or leave a comment below.

Thank you for your support.

The SciencesPo Alumni UK Team.
