Gilles Kepel is Professor and Chair of Middle East and Mediterranean Studies, at Sciences Po, where he heads the programs on the Arab and Muslim World, at the PhD, M.A.. and undergraduate levels. A visiting professor at NYU and Columbia University in 1995-96, Dr. Kepel holds degrees in Arabic, English and Philosophy, and a PhD in political science from Sciences Po. He is a contributor to the Financial Times, Le Monde, La Repubblica, El Pais, Al Hayat, and a number of Arabic language and international newspapers. He is regularly interviewed on BBC radio and TV, CNN, Al Jazeera, Al Arabiyya, LBC and French and International channels. He frequently travels to North Africa, the Middle East, the Gulf, the US and Europe and is a member of the Board of Directors of the Institute of the Arab World (IMA) located in Paris. Some of his recent publications include: Beyond Terror and Martyrdom; The War for Muslim Minds; Jihad, the trail of political Islam; Al-Qaeda in its own word; Bad Moon Rising : a Chronicle of the Middle East Today; Jihad/ The trail of Political Islam; Allah in the West : Islamic Movements in America and Europe; The Revenge of God; Les Banlieues de l’Islam; Muslim Extremism in Egypt/The Roots of Radical Islam.

Aziz Senni is the Founder and Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Business Angels des Cités Partenaires Gestion, and the founder ofJeunes Entrepreneurs de France. He is the author of the book “L’ascenseur social est en panne, j’ai pris l’escalier“, of which the royalties are used to finance bursaries for college students at Mantes la Jolie. He is a symbol of the “social elevator” method, which Richard Descoings has successfully implemented at Sciences Po.

It has been another rich year for Sciences Po Alumni UK and our Charity Trust, with the notable following highlights:

• Many successful Sciences Po Wednesdays at the RAC, where students and young alumni have met with older generations.

• A conference on Europe with LSE Sciences Po Professor Florence Deloche-Gaudez.

• A dinner with the Director General of the Institut Montaigne and its director of studies and friend Laurent Bigorgne who has recently been named DG of Institut Montaigne (congratulations!).

• A private dinner at the Residence of our Ambassador with Alain Juppé, now Foreign Minister.

• A well-attended event with former minister Rachida Dati.

• A dinner-debate with journalist Jean-Francois Kahn at the maconnic temple of the Andaz.

• A Sciences Po Wednesday with alumna and artist Valérie Jolly around her latest work, which was delightful.

• Another conference with leading US universities on Nuclear Iran with Vice Amiral du Puy-Montbrun (thanks to Gabriel Pierard).

• A reunion around the commemoration of the Appeal of 18 June involving many leading politicians.

• A cocktail around Professor Jean-Claude Casanova and our director Richard Descoings.

• The Florence Trust Summer Exhibition with alumna and artist Nadège Druzkowski…

• … and, last but not least, the Sciences Po Alumni UK Trust Gala at the Fishmonger’s Hall hosting Ernest-Antoine Seillière, under the high patronage of HE Maurice Gourdault-Montagne, with our director Richard Descoings and his team including Nadia Marik.

Many many thanks to all those who attended as well as those who contributed to organising these events, most of whom are part of our team cc’ed on our mails.

With your help and support, there is every chance that 2011 will also be a great success, starting with:

• A Sciences Po Wednesday de la rentrée to be scheduled with Stéphanie and Julia as soon as our students are back.

• An expected opportunity to meet with PM François Fillon, who has planned a visit in the UK in the New Year; we will make suggestions so that Sciences Po Alumni UK are invited.

• And, Jean-François Copé (Sciences po ‘85), former French minister, founder of think-tank Génération France and leader of the UMP, should be with us on Wednesday 19 January in the evening. The meeting will be a Forum dedicated to Employment and involve French and British speakers. All details to come in the New year. Many thanks to those who have declared an interest.

• Sciences Po Alumni UK Charity Gala at the House of Commons, under the patronage of alumnus H.E. Maurice Gourdault-Montagne, sponsored by MP and former minister Denis MacShane, hosting alumnus Baron David de Rothschild, in the presence of Richard Descoings, where Assia de Juniac and Roger Seydoux scholarships were awarded.

• Launch of the Sciences Po UK Board, with 20 leading UK seniors led by Charles de Croisset, and private dinner with former foreign minister and alumnus Hubert Védrine.

• Dinner-debates with alumni business leaders – e.g. Clara Gaymard – and Sciences Po academia – e.g. Olivier Duhamel, and economists Yann Algan/Etienne Wasmer – as well as a memorable conference/dinner-détente/after-dinner with novelist Frédéric Beigbeder.

• Conferences and talks with alumni Professor Marie Mendras on Russia, François Bujon de l’Estang and others on Obama organised with Columbia, Georgetown, Johns Hopkins and Tufts, Jean-Pierre Jouyet and Howard Davies with FBC, economist Nicolas Baverez, thanks to Samir Assaf and HSBC, and prominent UK alumni – Samir Assaf, Nicolas Cattelain, Benoit d’Angelin,Chris Masek, Arnaud Vaissié – at the IHEE London seminar.

There is no reason why 2010 should not be an even richer one for us, starting with:

• An invitation accepted by former prime minister Alain Juppé, who will be hosted at a private donor dinner, who will speak also at a public venue at 6pm on 13 January.

• A lecture at the Institute by Dr Florence Deloche-Gaudez, Sciences Po –LSE, with the participation of John Henley, The Guardian, on “A New EU ‘President’ and ‘High Representative for Foreign Affairs’- after the Lisbon Treaty, who leads Europe”? at 6pm on 21 January.

• A dinner-debate with François Rachline, managing director of think-tank l’Institut Montaigne and professor at Sciences Po, on28 January; also, we will be associated to an event hosting Claude Bébéar, founder of l’Institut Montaigne, in London in the spring.

• Next Sciences Po Wednesday on 3rd February at the RAC.

• A meeting with Nicole Guedj, former human rights minister, leading humanitarian relief figure, with the popular movement on 4 February.

SciencesPo Alumni UK is pleased to invite you to a dinner-debate on Monday 22 June.

At the Forefront of Regulation and Discrimination studies in France : perspectives from two leading French economists.

Sciences Po Professors Yann Algan and Etienne Wasmer are holders of the “Le Monde – Prix du meilleur jeune économiste” prize, Yann Algan in 2009 and Etienne Wasmer in 2006.

Etienne Wasmer graduated from the Ecole Polytechnique and completed his PhD at the London School of Economics. He is a one of the most impressive contemporary economist working in the field of Labour Studies. He is director of the PhD studies in Economics at Sciences Po.

Yann Algan completed his PhD at Paris 1-Panthéon Sorbonne. In 2007 he wrote La Société de Défiance with Pierre Cahuc and got the LIRE prize for the best French Essay. His research is known to inform public debate in France.

Both of them teach the main Economics course at the Undergraduate level at Sciences Po which was taught by Professor Dominique Strauss-Kahn before his appointment at the IMF.
