Join us for the first Sc-Po Wednesday of 2011 at the RAC

January 24, 2011

Our next event, Sciences Po Wednesday, will be held next week on 2 February from 7pm at the Long Bar of the Royal Automobile Club (RAC), 89 Pall Mall, SW1.

Bookings are open to all members of our community, students and alumni. To book your place, email SRambosson@venipartners.com.

Reminder – Sciences Po Wednesday is a monthly gathering, on the first Wednesday of each month, devised simply to give the opportunity to Sciences Po alumni and UK-based students to meet/catch up. It is a nice inter-generational exchange forum. It is a valuable way for students/graduates to obtain valuable advice from more seasoned alumni.

We hope that many alumni will attend so that we can catch up and give youngsters the opportunity to chat with them.

Special Sciences Po Alumni UK Wishes | 2011

January 1, 2011

Dear Friends,

It has been another rich year for Sciences Po Alumni UK and our Charity Trust, with the notable following highlights:

  • Many successful Sciences Po Wednesdays at the RAC, where students and young alumni have met with older generations.
  • A conference on Europe with LSE Sciences Po Professor Florence Deloche-Gaudez.
  • A dinner with the Director General of the Institut Montaigne and its director of studies and friend Laurent Bigorgne who has recently been named DG of Institut Montaigne (congratulations!).
  • A private dinner at the Residence of our Ambassador with Alain Juppé, now Foreign Minister.
  • A well-attended event with former minister Rachida Dati.
  • A dinner-debate with journalist Jean-Francois Kahn at the maconnic temple of the Andaz.
  • A Sciences Po Wednesday with alumna and artist Valérie Jolly around her latest work, which was delightful.
  • Another conference with leading US universities on Nuclear Iran with Vice Amiral du Puy-Montbrun (thanks to Gabriel Pierard).
  • A reunion around the commemoration of the Appeal of 18 June involving many leading politicians.
  • A cocktail around Professor Jean-Claude Casanova and our director Richard Descoings.
  • The Florence Trust Summer Exhibition with alumna and artist Nadège Druzkowski
  • … and, last but not least, the Sciences Po Alumni UK Trust Gala at the Fishmonger’s Hall hosting Ernest-Antoine Seillière, under the high patronage of HE Maurice Gourdault-Montagne, with our director Richard Descoings and his team including Nadia Marik.

Many many thanks to all those who attended as well as those who contributed to organising these events, most of whom are part of our team cc’ed on our mails.

With your help and support, there is every chance that 2011 will also be a great success, starting with:

  • Sciences Po Wednesday de la rentrée to be scheduled with Stéphanie and Julia as soon as our students are back.
  • An expected opportunity to meet with PM François Fillon, who has planned a visit in the UK in the New Year; we will make suggestions so that Sciences Po Alumni UK are invited.
  • And, Jean-François Copé (Sciences po ‘85), former French minister, founder of think-tank Génération France and leader of the UMP, should be with us on Wednesday 19 January in the evening. The meeting will be a Forum dedicated to Employment and involve French and British speakers. All details to come in the New year. Many thanks to those who have declared an interest.

We hope that 2011 will be a year full of success for everyone; needless to say that it will be an even more successful one for us if you subscribe to Sciences Po Alumni UK, as was discussed a few days ago at our AGM; if you have not yet made your annual subscription, please contact me as well as our departing treasurer Stefan Lavau (stefanlavau@wanadoo.fr ), who is relocating to Paris, and our incoming treasurer Xavier d’Aumale (xavier.daumale@gmail.com), who has only briefly left the team to finalise his studies at Sciences Po but is back…

Also, thanks to Julien Artero and Stefan Lavau, in contact with the alumni Polo Clubyou are able to order some gorgeous Sciences Po Alumni Polo Shirts with us; if you wish more information please contact us.

Thank you all, in particular the team and our regulars as well obviously as the donors of the Trust, for your support. Warmest Wishes from Sciences Po Alumni UK for 2011.

We do hope that there will be plenty of good resolutions, including to attend our events and subscribe as well as to help to  grow and reshape the team. Oscar Wilde said that “good resolutions are simply checks that men draw on a bank where they have no account.” Let’s hope that the crisis is well behind us and that there will be plenty of bank accounts in 2011…

Amicalement yours, Have a lovely New Year’s Eve,

For the team of Sciences Po Alumni UK

* * * What is Sciences Po Wednesday? * * *

To those of you who may not be familiar with our monthly Sciences Po Wednesday event, it was first launched in November 2008 in London. The objective was to provide the Sciences Po community in London – both alumni and students – with regular opportunities to meet and exchange in a relaxed atmosphere. Sciences Po Wednesday usually takes place at the beginning of each month.

In 2009, our Sciences Po Wednesday events were held at the Walker of Whitehall near Trafalgar Square. The event successfully managed to attract a wide range of Sciences Po Alumni and young students as well as graduates eager to network and learn about professional opportunities – and still in a relaxed environment.

In 2010, we have decided to respond to the growing popularity of this event by offering a greater venue that would make this monthly gathering a bit more special.

The Royal Automobile Club is a private members’ club steeped in over 100 years of history and tradition as a social and automotive club. It was founded on 10 August 1897 as the Automobile Club of Great Britain.

If you live in London and would like to catch up with the Sciences Po community, this is the perfect event to do so.

Sciences Po Wednesday – Royal Automobile Club – 3rd March

February 20, 2010

Given the fantastic success of our first 2010 Sciences Po Wednesday, we will be holding our next one on 3 March from 7pm again at the Long Bar of the Royal Automobile Club (RAC), 89 Pall Mall, SW1.

Sciences Po Wednesday is a monthly gathering which is devised simply to give the opportunity to Sciences Po alumni and UK-based students to meet, catch up and exchange in an informal context. It is a valuable way for students/graduates to obtain career advice from more seasoned alumni.

Our partners from student career group Sciences Po Avenir will attend this Sciences Po Wednesday on 3rd March. We hope to help them reach out to Alumni in the UK and facilitate discussions regarding internship & job opportunities for young Sciences Po graduates. So if you haven’t had a chance to link up with Sciences Po Avenir so far, please join us on the 3rd of March at the RAC.

2010 Greetings – Sciences Po Alumni UK

January 5, 2010

Dear friends and fellow members,

2009 has been a rich year for us. Some of the highlights include:

  • Sciences Po Alumni UK Charity Gala at the House of Commons, under the patronage of alumnus H.E. Maurice Gourdault-Montagne, sponsored by MP and former minister Denis MacShane, hosting alumnus Baron David de Rothschild, in the presence of Richard Descoings, where Assia de Juniac and Roger Seydoux scholarships were awarded.
  • Launch of the Sciences Po UK Board, with 20 leading UK seniors led by Charles de Croisset, and private dinner with former foreign minister and alumnus Hubert Védrine.

There is no reason why 2010 should not be an even richer one for us, starting with:

  • An invitation accepted by former prime minister Alain Juppé, who will be hosted at a private donor dinner, who will speak also at a public venue at 6pm on 13 January.
  • A lecture at the Institute by Dr Florence Deloche-Gaudez, Sciences Po –LSE, with the participation of John Henley, The Guardian, on “A New EU ‘President’ and ‘High Representative for Foreign Affairs’- after the Lisbon Treaty, who leads Europe”? at 6pm on 21 January.
  • A dinner-debate with François Rachline, managing director of think-tank l’Institut Montaigne and professor at Sciences Po, on28 January; also, we will be associated to an event hosting Claude Bébéar, founder of l’Institut Montaigne, in London in the spring.
  • A meeting with Nicole Guedj, former human rights minister, leading humanitarian relief figure, with the popular movement on 4 February.

We will publish further details of these events at the beginning of January; in the meantime, please let us know which you intend to attend.

We hope that 2010 will be a rich year for everyone; needless to say that it will be an even richer one for us if you subscribe to Sciences Po Alumni UK; in order to do so, please visit our membership section and/or contact our treasurer Stefan Lavau (stefan.lavau@hsbcib.com).

In the run-up to the London Olympics, may we leave you with words from a famous Sciences Po alumn Baron Pierre de Coubertin: “the important thing in life is not the victory but the contest; the essential is not to have won but to have fought well”; may you have both contests and victories in 2010, even though for some the future may not be what it used to be.

Thank you for your support. Warmest Wishes from Sciences Po Alumni UK for 2010.

Amicalement votre,

Stéphane Rambosson

President

Next Sciences Po Wednesday – 6 May – London

sciencespo-wednesday1The Next SciencesPo Wednesday will be held next Wednesday 6 May at 7 Pm, at the Walkers of Whitehall, 15 Craig’s Court (at the corner of Whitehall), SW1A (very near Trafalgar Sq).

This monthly gathering – held on the 1st Wednesday of each month at 7pm – is devised simply to give the opportunity to Sciences Po alumni/friends and UK-based students to meet up and catch up. SciencesPo Wednesday is a nice inter-generational exchange forum. It is a valuable way for students to obtain key advice from alumni. Therefore, thanks to Stéphanie Morisset notably, we give such alumni-student exchanges more structure via 15 min 1-on-1s or 1-on-2s during the evening. Do let us know if you will be coming and wish to give some of your time to that effect.

Sciences Po Wednesday – 22 Avril

April 11, 2009

sciencespo-wednesday1Our next SciencesPo Wednesday will take place on the 22nd of April at  the Walkers of Whitehall in London, next to Trafalgar Square.

If you are an alumni and recently arrived in London, Sciences Po Wednesday is a good way to meet and network with senior and more junior alumni.

This monthly event also attracts a good number of Sciences Po students currently at the London School of Economics or elsewhere who can easily chat with alumni happy to share their experience.

We do our best to keep this event relaxed and unformal, so do not hesitate to join us on the 22nd of April at the Walkers of Whiteall.
