OF all the things you might expect to see in a language-teaching classroom, a piano is perhaps not high on the list. But that’s one of the most noticeable objects in Yalan Chuang’s office in King’s Cross, where she teaches businesspeople Chinese. “It is a very musical language, some words are spoken like a soprano and other like an alto,” she explains. Then idea came about from her first office, in what used to be Holy Trinity Church in South Kensington, where she inherited a grand piano. It has since become a vital part of her method.

Science Po Alumnus and Goldman Sachs Hedge Fund Head Flamand Said to Start Own Firm

According to press reports, Sciences Po Alumnus (EF95) Pierre Henri Flamand, head of Goldman Sachs Hedge Fund, is said to start own firm.

Mr Flamand has worked at Goldman Sachs for 15 years and has run Goldman Sachs Principal Strategies, part of its asset management unit, from London since 2007. The unit was transformed under his leadership into a hedge fund that managed $7bn of investments in 2008.

Flamand is setting up his own fund as Wall Street pay and proprietary trading come under increased scrutiny from lawmakers.

Given the fantastic success of our first 2010 Sciences Po Wednesday, we will be holding our next one on 3 March from 7pm again at the Long Bar of the Royal Automobile Club (RAC), 89 Pall Mall, SW1.

Sciences Po Wednesday is a monthly gathering which is devised simply to give the opportunity to Sciences Po alumni and UK-based students to meet, catch up and exchange in an informal context. It is a valuable way for students/graduates to obtain career advice from more seasoned alumni.

Our partners from student career group Sciences Po Avenir will attend this Sciences Po Wednesday on 3rd March. We hope to help them reach out to Alumni in the UK and facilitate discussions regarding internship & job opportunities for young Sciences Po graduates. A Chicago lecture on “Reforming the Financial System: What Went Wrong And How To (And How Not To) Fix It” by Randall Kroszner, Norman R. Bobins Professor of Economics, at Chicago Booth (Woolgate Exchange, 25 Basinghall St, London EC2V 5HA) will be held on 22 February.

Programme: 7:00pm Registration; 7:30pm Lecture; 8:30pm Networking Reception.

Kroszner will give his perspective from his years as a Fed governor (2006 -09) on the origins of the crisis and his assessment of the key reform proposals, some of which could have the unintended consequence of making the system more fragile.

Coubertin Olympic Awards: a new annual student competition

The Coubertin Olympic Awards, a new annual student competition aiming to promote corporate integrity through the ethical values of the Olympic movement, were launched on 4th February 2010.  The Competition is to run until the opening of the London 2012 Olympic Games. The launch was hosted by HE Maurice Gourdault-Montagne at the French Residence, and was presented by the co-organisers of the awards, Antoine de Navacelle for the International Pierre de Coubertin Committee, and Philippa Foster-Back, Director of the Institute of Business Ethics. Guest speakers included Sir Philip Craven, President of the International Paralympics Committee and a member of the IOC, and Denis Masseglia, President of the French Olympics Committee (CONSF) in the presence of UK and French University representatives (including Sciences Po), Athletes and Business people.

The awards are sponsored by EDF Energy, are accredited by the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (Locog) under the “Inspire” Mark. HRH the Princess Royal, Princess Anne, has offered Her Patronage to the Competition. Please note that Baron Pierre de Coubertin was a Sciences Po alumnus.
